Media Links

By Wendy Herman, TCOT Project Servant Leader (with lots of help from @readmylipstick and @politisite)

These are links to local media outlets in both Maine and Pennsylvania.
History teaches us that Arlen Specter rarely changes his mind once he
sells out conservative ideals, but we included Pennslvania for fun.
Instead, we'd like to focus as much as possible on Maine. Collins
wavered a bit on Fox today suggesting that she might night vote for
the bill if it comes back from conference with too much pork
(whatever!). Snow has avoided most microphones, which may mean she is
vulnerable.

Call local radio in Maine. Write local newspapers. Ask them to put
pressure on their Senators. Use specifics that are in the bill. Do not
be afraid to shame these senators. Sample scripts are below. Feel free
to adapt them to better voice your opinions.

Thanks.

Sample Letter to the Editor:

Dear Editor:

I am profoundly unhappy with Senators Collins and Snowe's deliberate
sell-out of the American people by agreeing to compromise on the $800
billion stimulus package (S. 1). Some how these two think that carving
a mere $100 billion out of the package will make us all think they are
being fiscally responsible--like we just might forget the remaining
$800 billion wasn't going to fund things like swimming pools, frisbee
parks and redecorating government offices. Senator Collins appeared on
Fox news on Saturday, February 7th, and stated that this compromise
bill would put money in our weekly paycheck. I would like to know HOW?
What provision of this bill give me more money in my pay envelope? We
don't know because she has refused to publish the compromise bill thus
far. She also stated that she would be willing to vote no on this bill
if it came back from conference with too much pork attached. Senator
Snowe is in hiding, apparently very "proud" of her decision to betray
our trust in her. I would like to ask you to encourage both these
Senators to change their minds once again and vote against this
terrible piece of legislation. It cannot be fixed, it is too bloated.
It must be killed and then the process can be started over. There is a
group on the internet that I am a part of called Top Conservatives On
Twitter. Twitter is a micro-blogging site and over 2500 conservatives
from all over the nation have banded together to try and de-rail this
out of control bill. There are many things I don't like about this
bill, but my least favorite are :

1. (fill these in with your favorites. Include specific expenditures,
the hurried pace of the process, the lack of transparency, etc.)

2.

3.

I have written and call both Senators offices and am asking you to use
your considerable influence to encourage Senators Snowe and Collins to
abandon whatever agreement they have with the Democrats and vote NO on
this bill.

Thank you,

Radio Talking Points:

Pick one of the following to ask the host about:

1. Senator Collins was on Fox on Sat. Feb 7th and said this
compromise bill would put more money in our paychecks. How?

2. Does Senator Collins and Senator Snowe really want their legacy to
be voting "yes" to socialism?

3. Would it be better for us as individuals to have this bloated
spending bill or half our withholding back in our pockets as Michael
Patrick Leahy has suggested in his alternative stimulus plan?

Take the TCOT Challenge

By Wendy Herman, TCOT Project Servant Leader

Michael Patrick Leahy, co-founder of Top Conservatives on Twitter, has put forth an amazing alternative to the pork laden stimulus bill that the Senate is currently negotiating. At this date, we have not seen the "compromise bill" that turncoat Republican Senators Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Arlen Specter have colluded on with their Democratic floor mates. However, we at TCOT are very certain that at almost $800 billion dollars it is still crammed with too much spending that will do nothing to stimulate the sluggish economy and put Americans back to work.

Mr. Leahy's entire plan can be seen here:

http://michaelpatrickleahy.blogspot.com/2009/02/tcot-plan-cut-all-personal-an...

This plan has one (single, lonely, effective) plank. IMMEDIATELY CUT ALL PERSONAL AND CORPORATE INCOME TAXES IN HALF FOR ALL TWELVE MONTHS OF 2009.

No new government offices. No frisbee parks. No swimming pools.

The "lost revenue" to the government would amount to about $800 billion, equal to what congress is recommending. However, that lost revenue would remain with you, the person who earned it. So we at TCOT got to thinking:

How would cutting our withholding in half effect our daily lives?

Thus, the TCOT CHALLENGE was born.

Below we'd like you to tell us what an extra 200, 300, 400 or more dollars a week would change in your world. What would you purchase? Where would you go? How would you invest it? If the government says that spending money drives this economy, what better way to reverse a down turn that pumping and immediate $60 billion into the economy every month. Hey, you earned it, why shouldn't you decide how it should be spent. We want to know specifically, how would PORKULUS (the current stimulus plan) benefit you personally in 2009? And would TCOT Plan or PORKULUS benefit you more?

Here is an example of how one family would use their hard earned cash:

http://michaelpatrickleahy.blogspot.com/2009/02/how-one-member-of-tcot-would-...

After you let us know what you think--be sure to let us know what state you're from--go to this link http://moveovermoveon.posterous.com/media-links and send this website to the media outlets everywhere, but especially Maine and Pennsylvania. Blog about it, tweet about it or link it on your Face Book. Help the north east main street media let their senators, Collins, Snowe, & Specter, know that we are very unhappy that they have chosen to compromise our future. It is, after all, "for the children."

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD! LEAVE A COMMENT FOR CONGRESS BELOW!

Leave your state initials by your name, or in the body of your comment, so we'll know where your from. Our goal is 1000 comments by Monday morning. We have asked Conservatives icons Senators Thune and DeMint to read these from the senate floor. Thanks.

List of Wobbly Republicans

By Wendy Herman, TCOT Project Servant Leader

IT IS TIME FOR A FILIBUSTER!! These are the wobbly Republicans. We have had issues with reaching some of their offices, so we recommend faxes and phone calls to their state offices. That information is at the bottom of the page. Now is not the time to grow weary. We are making a difference. If you heard President Obama's speech last night or Harry Reid's from the Senate floor, you know we are VERY close to shutting this thing down. Please do what ever you can to bring about the demise of this bill.

Please let Senator ______ know that I would like for him/her to NOT COMPROMISE, but lead the charge and defeat this bill with a filibuster."

To the Honorable Senator _________,

RE: FILIBUSTER

My name is ____________, and I am a member of a conservative social media group called Top Conservatives on Twitter. Because this bill is full of wasteful spending and will not effectively boost the economy, and will be more expensive than the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined, I am writing today to ask you to NOT COMPROMISE, but kill this bill. It is a bill that is being marketed as an immediate response to a national emergency, but many economist have agreed that it will do nothing but prolong the recession. It is a poorly written bill that cannot be fixed. It must be defeated and started anew. I urge you to keep the country's best interest, and not the desires of liberal interest groups, in mind and defeat this bill.

Sincerely,

Talking Points 2-5-09

Tuesday, the Rasmussen Reports released its latest poll on the
Stimulus Bill and the results prove that the more Americans hear about
the bill, the less they like it. What has not been widely reported is
that the poll also shows that Jim DeMint's alternative is gaining in
approval, even though it has not been heavily publicized!

 1) The latest survey shows that only 37% of Americans favor the
current bill. Two weeks ago, the support was at 45% and last week it
was at 42%. That's an eight point drop in just two weeks. We are
having an effect! The most interesting numbers are among the
"independent" voters, who oppose the bill by a full 50% and favor it
by only 27%. Furthermore, overall opposition to the bill has gone from
34% two weeks ago to 43% today - an increase of nine percent. For the
first time, more Americans oppose the Democrats' pork-laden
vote-buying bill than favor it.

 2) The Rasmussen poll also showed that more Americans favor a tax
cut-only bill than favor what the Democrats have proposed. Such a bill
enjoys a 45% approval to a disapproval of only 34%. Among
"independents", those numbers are 46% approval and 35% disapproval.
Only Democrats still overwhelmingly approve of the Democrats' attempt
to load us and our children up with a trillion dollars' worth of debt.

Support tax cuts is massive. Fifty-seven percent believe that tax cuts
help the economy while only 17% believe they hurt. About the same
number of people (56%) believe that they pay more than their fair
share of taxes.

Keep up the pressure, TCOTers! Now is the time to start introducing
people to Senator Jim DeMint's "American Option" alternative plan.

Talking Points 2-4-09

1. SO, HOW MUCH MONEY ARE WE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT HERE? If you
started right now and spent a million dollars every day until you had
spent the principle amount of the Stimulus Bill ($825 billion) today,
you would spend your last penny on June 17, 4395. Well, you wouldn't.
Your descendants 82 generations from now would. If someone had started
spending a million dollars a day starting on January 1, 1 AD, they
would still have over $138 billion dollars left and a little over 380
more years to go.

1 Year = 365.424199 Days
http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/JulianDate.php
http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=11152

(Thanks @jimmiebjr for your brilliance)

2. WHAT ARE THEY SPENDING ALL THAT MONEY ON? Here is a partial list
of some of the most amazingly wasteful spending you've ever seen.

*$600 million for hybrid vehicles for federal employees (That's
roughly 600 per state)

*$448 million to construct the Dept. of Homeland Security headquarters
(where are they housed now?), and a whopping $248 million for
furniture once it's built (that's a lot of desks and chairs).

*$2 billion (notice the B) to re-start FutureGen, a near-zero messions
coal power plant that the Dept of Energy DEFUNDED because the project
was inefficient

*$6 billion (again the B) to turn federal buildings into "green" buildings

*$160 million for "paid volunteers" (WTW?) at the Corporation for
Nat'l & Community Service (Who?)

Whole list can be found here:
http://michellemalkin.com/2009/02/03/generational-theft-act-fun-facts-from-se...

(Thanks Michelle Malkin)

3. IT'S TIME FOR THIS TO END. No pork. No compromises. No turncoats.
This bill cannot be salvaged. It is poorly written and has too much
waste. It must be voted down by any means available, including
filibuster. John McCain sent out an e-mail asking Republicans to sign
a petition against this bill. Let us join him (AND hold his feet to
the fire) and encourage all Republicans to abandon this bill.

While it's been fun bandying with the liberals and the staff who
answers their phones, now is the time to focus like a lazer beam on
the Republican Senators and make sure their heads aren't turned by all
the sweetheart deals the Dems are trying to woo them with.

Call them all. Call them often.
http://moveovermoveon.posterous.com/senate-phonefax-lists-we-mail

And then call them again.

4. NEW TOOLS & TECHNOLOGY. We are blessed beyond measure to have Aaron
Day on our team. Aaron has come up with am amazing tool for us. He and
his team have come up with a way to give every American a "line item
veto on the stimulus package." Go to this site
http://www.daylightnetwork.com/senate-stimulus. Read the continually
updated, ever changing parts of the stimulus package. Comment on it
and/or rate it. Let the senators know what you think. Please check
this site out and pass it around to everyone you know.

Thanks for your hard work. Vote may be as early as Friday. Don't stop
now. As Sean Hannity said on his show today "It is working."

Talking Points 2-3-09

We had a great day yesterday! Thanks for all who participated. There
are some of you that are flat burning up the phone/fax lines. Please
know that your voices are being heard.

 1) THE PLAN IS COST INEFFECTIVE. If we divided the cost of the
stimulus plan equally among every family in the United States, it
would cost each one $10,520. That is approximately what each family
would spend on food, clothing, and health care for a whole year.
(Source: Heritage Foundation -
http://blog.heritage.org/2009/01/27/stimulus-101-the-pelosi-reid-obama-debt-p...

 2) REPUBLICANS HAVE A BETTER IDEA. Senator Jim DeMint has an
alternative plan that could create almost two million total jobs this
year and next and almost 18 million jobs in the next ten years. It is
called The American Option and, if enacted, it would:
- make the temporary tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 permanent;
- lower the top nominal personal income tax rate to 25 percent and
simplify the tax code the Barack Obama's appointees seem to have
trouble following by. There would be three, and only three, tax rates:
10, 15, and 25 percent;
- reduce the second-highest corporate income tax rate in the world
from 35 percent to 25;
- repeal the alternative minimum tax once and for all;
- hold the capital gains and dividends taxes at 15 percent;
- kill the Death Tax for estates under $5 million, and cut the tax
rate to 15 percent for those above;
- extend the $1,000-per-child tax credit;
- repeal the marriage tax penalty
- limit itemized deductions to home mortgage interest and charitable
contributions.

It takes no more money from your pocket. In fact, it puts money in
your pocket, not just once, but every single year. It does not reward
political donors and government bureaucrats and buy votes for greedy
politicians. It gives control back to mom and pop business owners,
employers, employees, newlywed couples, bereaved families, and
families just like yours and mine.

 (Source: Senator Jim DeMint -
http://demint.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressReleases.Detail&Pre...)

(Thanks to @jimmiebjr for his research)

 3) FILIBUSTER. Please start asking your senators about what they
think about the filibuster option. When senate Republicans start to
"compromise" or "reach across the aisle" it always means that
conservatives are the only ones giving anything up. This bill is a bad
bill. There is no way it can be made better. It must be scrapped and
re-done from its foundations. The only way to do that is to filibuster
it to death. We are NOT asking for their commitment to a filibuster,
but do want to take their temperature and see what they think.

Thanks for your continued hard work.

 Wendy Herman
(@txskirt on twitter)

Talking Points 2-2-09

Here are a couple of topics we'd like to flood the Senator's offices
with today. If you have a chance to call into your local talk radio
station or write a letter to the editor of your local paper, that
would be a great way to spread the word about what we're doing.

Thanks for your continued hard work:

 1. THE STIMULUS PACKAGE WILL NOT STIMULATE THE ECONOMY.
From the Washington Times: "But as the Democrats' House bill headed to
the Senate, opinions differed sharply over its effect on taxpayers and
the troubled economy. It has virtually no bang for the buck because it
doesn't affect incentives for working, investing and things that
actually make the economy go," said economist J.D. Foster at the
Heritage Foundation.

"Even if you get all of the money at once in a government check or
over a quarter of the year, it will have the same effect on the
economy -- zero," Mr. Foster said.

 (Editor--Thanks Steve Spinks)

 2. EXAMPLES OF PORK SPENDING IN THE BILL:

 From the Wall Street Journal:

(Pork Example):7 billion for modernizing federal buildings and facilities,
for example the Smithsonian is to receive $150 million.
(Counter: We all appreciate the Smithsonian, but this is not a long term job
creator.

(Pork Example): $600 million more for the federal government to buy new
cars. (Counter: $3 billion a year is already being allotted for 600,000
vehicles.)

 (Pork Example): $54 billion will go to federal programs such as;
Government Accountability Office
Office of Management and Budget
Economic Development Administration
Small Business Administration
Federal job training programs , and the list goes on.

(Counter: They have already been deemed as ineffective and cannot pass
financial audits.

 (Editor--Thanks Cathy Nagle)

 3. List of zip codes. Some senators won't talk to you unless you come
from a zip code in their state. Here is a list of zip codes:
http://www.zip-code-database.org/Ivoryton-(Connecticut)_Zip_Codes.htm

 (Editor--Thanks Phyllis Smith)

We will post more tonight. If you find something interesting, please
e-mail it to Wendy Herman from the TCOT Action Projects ning site.
Thanks.
